Professor Barsoum is an Emeritus Professor of Medicine and Nephrology at Kasr-El-Aini Medical School (KAMS) in Cairo, Egypt. He presided many national and international nephrology societies. He served as President of the Egyptian Society of Nephrology and the Arab Society of Nephrology and Renal Transplantation, Secretary General and chairman of the Nominating, Governance, Fellowship, Sister Renal Centers, Clinical Practice Guidelines, Publications and Tropical Nephrology Committees of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN). He founded and presided the African Association of Nephrology (AFRAN) in 1987. Professor Barsoum has a major interest in Renal Transplantation and served as the vice President of the International Society of Artificial Organs (ISAO) and the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation (MESOT). He has a major commitment to Medical Education and Training in Egypt and Emerging countries and chaired many strategic and regulatory national committees in the Egyptian Ministries of Health, High Education and Scientific Research.
